Looking at Vanderbilt baseball coach Tim Corbin after their first round game in the regional against ETSU, I couldn’t tell if Vandy lost by 1, by 12, or won by 3.
And that is a good thing.
Vandy did beat ETSU 9 to 1 on Friday night over at Hawkins Field. Corbin knows that is just one game, albeit an important one, in their quest to get back to the College World Series. He isn’t about to high five his players and shower them with praises over a game that they should have won anyway. His players know that all too well. So do we in the media.
The Commodores jumped out to a 5 to zip lead in the first inning and never looked back, although Corbin says, ‘Good and bad to jumping out early. Good you get that lead, but bad, you tend to relax and the energy is gone, not only from your team, but the crowd and that is what happened.’
So the coach and his team will hit the field Saturday night at Hawkins Field, taking on Illinois. Vandy stands two wins away now from hosting a Super Regional.
Don’t expect that poker face from Tim Corbin to change if they do.
